Doctor by the Universitat d'Alacant / Universidad de Alicante with the thesis Estudio de la dinámica en el suelo y del comportamiento agroquímico del metaarsenito como fungicida 1995. Supervised by Dr. Jorge Juan Mataix Beneyto, Dr. Francisco Miguel Burló Carbonell.

After graduating in Chemistry (1995), I did a postdoctoral stay at Louisiana State University, LSU (1996-1997). Later, I joined the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, UMH (1998). In 2002 I obtained my position as Associate Professor (Prof. Titular de Universidad) and in 2011 was promoted to Full Professor. Since 2007 I have been the director of the consolidated research group "Food Quality and Safety", and in the period November 2013 to August 2020 I was the coordinator of the PhD program “Agricultural, Agro-environmental and Food Resources and Technologies, ReTos-AAA”. Later (2022-2024) I collaborated with the Flavoring Working Group of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). My research lines are mainly related to Food Quality and Food Safety. In Food Quality, we study the effect of unit operations and agricultural practices on food quality. In addition, we try to promote the use of sensory analysis in the evaluation of quality and the study of the acceptance of processed foods, especially wine. In Food Safety, we develop strategies to reduce the chemical contamination of food, especially rice, rice-based products and wine. This research line started with my PhD dissertation entitled “Study of soil dynamics and agrochemical behavior of meta-arsenite as a fungicide” (https://www.educacion.gob.es/teseo/mostrarRef.do?ref=138822), where I studied the behavior of different arsenic species on the soil-plant system. Continued during my postdoctoral stay at LSU where I studied the biogeochemistry of arsenic species in wetland environments and their incorporation into the food chain. As a result of this research activity, >350 international articles, 35 national articles, 20 book chapters and 7 books have been published. In addition, I am delivering 2-4 plenary lectures annually at international conferences (total >40). I have supervised 18 PhD dissertations, 4 of which have been developed within international double doctorates (Mexico and Poland) and 5 have been awarded extraordinary doctoral prizes. In 2013, I received the International Collaboration award from the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra (Slovakia); in 2019 the Medal of Scientific Merit and in 2020 I was appointed doctor honoris causa of the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences (Wrocław, Poland). In August 2020 I was appointed as General Director of Science and Research of the Ministry of Innovation, Universities, Science and Digital Society of the Generalitat Valenciana, a position in which I ceased in September 2022, to return to UMH. Finally and since May 2023, I act as Vice-Rector for Research and Transfer.
